The prequel to the Alien movies has arrived.
After discovering an ancient marking in a cave, a team of scientists and explorers set out to an unknown planet to attempt to uncover the origins of the human race. This crew of the ship Prometheus could potentially make the greatest discovery of all time, or they could initiate the doom of the human race.
Firstly, I have a lot of problems with this storyline. It's predictable as hell; so much so that the trailer for the movie practically spoils the story for you. It's obvious what happens in the end. I also don't like how the entire team seems just thrown together with whoever they can find for the mission. These characters don't seem to get along with each other very well, and not much is known about them. Sometimes, even their occupation (which is also the part of the mission they are to conduct) is unclear. So while I may not exactly like the way the story is told, the rest of the movie is very different.
All the actors deliver exquisite performances, but especially Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender. These are two actors who are always awesome in their respective roles, including in Prometheus. Charlize Theron doesn't get a whole lot of screen time in the film, but is excellent whenever she is on screen in this film.
Now for the film's greatest redeeming value. Ridley Scott is famous for his Sci-Fi movies, and Sci-Fi movies often have very good special effects. This film does not have special effects that are very good. The last time I saw special effects this good was in James Cameron's Avatar. Nothing looks photoshopped, green screened, or added in post production. It all looks natural, even though it clearly isn't. For a Sci-Fi movie, this film definitely seems realistic. Keep in mind, I do not say this lightly.
Overall, Prometheus is a well put together film. It's well shot, well edited, and full of awesome effects. It's really only in the story where the problem with the film lies.
I give Prometheus a B+.
