The Call

Starring: Halle Berry and Abigail Breslin Directed by: Brad Anderson Screenplay by: Richard D'Ovidio      Let me begin by saying that this is one of the most intense films I've seen in a long time.  If you're not into films that will have you trying to catch your breath as you walk out of the theater, then you might not want to read much further.      Jordan Turner (Halle Berry) is an experienced 911 operator in Los Angeles.  She can't get too personally invested in each call she receives, but she can't help but to in one case; the kidnapping of a young girl, leaving her traumatized by what she hears on the other end of the phone, and ultimately being a cause of her leaving the call floor.      When a similar call about another kidnapping of a young girl comes in a few months after that incident, Jordan takes over for one operator who is unsure of what to do.  Jordan is forced to help this girl over the phone while the po...

The Oscars

Once again, it's that time of year.  It's the Academy Awards, and this year was quite the celebration.  2012 started off not tremendously well and for the first few months, there weren't really any superb quality films released until late March or so.  As the year progressed, we saw movies such as The Hunger Games, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Argo, Les Miserables, and so many more.  These movies made us laugh; they made us cry; they scared us half to death; they shocked us; they made us cheer; they made us think about the world we live in.  But most of all, they impressed us and told us why we go to the movies.  So, with that said, here are some of my thoughts on the biggest categories of the night. Best Supporting Actress      I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if you've seen Les Miserables, you know that this wasn't a tremendously close race.  There was no doubt in my mind that Anne Hathaway would ...

Side Effects

Starring: Rooney Mara, Jude Law, Channing Tatum, and Catherine Zeta-Jones Directed by: Steven Soderbergh Screenplay by: Scott Z. Burns      Finally, an actually really good movie that's been released in 2013!!!  It's about time!      Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law) is a psychiatrist.  One of his patients, Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara), is a candidate for a new antidepressant drug.  But this drug is only in its testing phase and Banks is one of the doctors who's conducting the study for the drug company.  Both of their worlds will change completely when Taylor becomes the center of attention due to some unexpected side effects of the drug.  It's both a doctor's and a patient's worst nightmare come to life.      There's something different about Steven Soderbergh's style of directing that's drastically different than many other directors' styles of directing.  While most directors focus on one main character whom ...

Movie 43

Starring, Directed by, and Screenplays by a whole lot of different people      Let me begin by informing you that this is perhaps the WORST film I've ever seen.  It's supposed to be terrible but I don't know if it's supposed to be this bad.      Basically, Charlie Wessler (Dennis Quaid), has never made a movie in his life and he's got this crazy idea for a film that's really just a lot of short films put together with a few fake commercial breaks in the middle.  He's trying to pitch this ridiculously bad idea of a movie to the studio, and the whole movie is just these short films that he's though of.  Other than that, there's really no plot at all.       All of these short films are extremely weird, but quite funny.  I wonder what made all of these famous actors with great careers going for them decide to participate in a movie this bad.  The short plot lines in each short are sometimes completely ridiculous and t...

Parker

Starring: Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, and Michael Chiklis Directed by: Taylor Hackford Screenplay by: John J. McLaughlin Jason Statham is back, and you know what that means...      Parker (Jason Statham) is a thief part of a team looking to cash in on a massive prize.  He's double crossed by the rest of the crew and left for dead.  If they say they're going to kill him, they should follow through with it because if they don't, Parker's going to make them regret not doing so.  With the help of a Palm Beach, Florida real estate agent, Leslie Rodgers (Jennifer Lopez), Parker has a chance at getting back at the guys who tried to kill him and get that massive prize.  Watch out Palm Beach, because some crazy action is coming to you.      It's a Jason Statham movie.  It's another movie filled with lots of ass-kicking action, but surprisingly, there's not as much in this film as one would expect based on Statham's other films like ...
